What is a carer?
A carer is someone who provides substantial or regular care in
the home for a friend or relative. They may be caring for someone
who has a serious illness, disability or mental illness.
The last census showed that there were over 12,000 carers in
Perth & Kinross alone! Nearly 2400 carers spend over 50 hours every
week looking after a loved one.
However, such a level of commitment can seriously affect the
health of the carer.
- 46% of carers who spend more than 20 hours a week caring for
another suffer a long-standing illness themselves.
- Specifically due to their caring commitments, 38% of carers
suffer nervous tension or depression.
- Carers are twice as likely to suffer mental illness if they do
not get a break from caring.

Caring for the Carers
Support groups are held in Perth,
Blairgowrie, Coupar Angus and Alyth and are the perfect outlet
for talking about your experiences and emotions.
Individual advice & assistance: our trained
support workers visit carers at home to talk, listen and make
sure both the carer and cared-for receive support.
If you want a listening ear or somebody that
could make things easier for you, please contact us or drop

Giving Carers a Break
Having a break for a couple of hours makes a
massive difference. Studies have shown that carers are twice as
likely to suffer mental ill health (35% compared to 17%) if they do
not receive a break.
We run four day clubs throughout Perth and Kinross
where we look after the cared-for to give the carer a break for the
day. If you could benefit from a break and care for somebody who
might enjoy the day clubs, please contact us.

Help for Carers
20% of carers have to give up their job to care
for somebody else and carers tell us that one of the biggest
problems is that they don’t know what help is available.
- Over 50% of carers are unaware that they are
entitled to an assessment for a allowance of £46.95
- Nearly £1 billion in allowances goes unclaimed
each year.
- 53% of carers receive no support, advice or
counselling.
We help carers deal with social services and fill
out forms such as Disability Living Allowance and Attendance
Allowance. We can also help carers find funding if they need special
equipment or adaptations in the home. If you are a carer, or you
know somebody who is, please contact us. We can help you to help and
care for others.
