Opening of First Dedicated Carers Centre in Perth & Kinross

March 22nd 2019, By pkavs

We are very excited to announce that PKAVS is opening the first ever dedicated Carers Centre in Perth & Kinross. Located on Lewis Place, the Centre will address the unprecedented increase in demand for unpaid carers support. Over the last two years alone, PKAVS have seen a 96% increase in unpaid carers seeking help, with the services being delivered at record levels.

The Carers Centre will provide vital support, including opportunities for carers of all ages to meet with experienced Support Workers, a Day Centre in which the ‘cared for’ can spend the day enjoying stimulating and engaging activities while carers get a well-earned break, and facilities for young carers to relax and spend time with others their age, gaining valuable respite from their caring role, as well as getting support to help them with their schoolwork and academic achievement.

The Centre will also include an enjoyable sensory garden, areas for complimentary therapies, and a base for PKAVS vital Carers Telephone Service, which since its launch in 2018, makes over 500 calls to carers every month, offering a friendly listening ear and providing helpful advice to help them to manage their caring role.

Paul Graham, PKAVS Chief Executive, said, “We are very pleased to be able to open this dedicated Centre that will benefit the thousands of hard-working unpaid carers throughout Perth & Kinross. The role of carers is often overlooked, and it is only right that they are given all the support possible to help them to manage their caring role. Our Carers Centre will also let carers have some valuable respite away from caring, allowing them to be people first and carers second.”

“We are grateful for the support of our partners in the Council, Health & Social Care Partnership, Big Lottery, The Gannochy Trust, and others who have helped make this exciting new Carers Centre possible.”

“Many of our partners such as Support in Mind, Alzheimer Scotland, Citizens Advice Bureau, Welfare Rights, and Relationship Scotland, to name but a few, will be providing support for the new dedicated facility – all with the focus on caring for the carers of Perth & Kinross.”

The sadly missed Cllr. Barbara Vaughan was a long-time advocate for young carers, and through the passion she had for these children, she took a great interest and provided much support to PKAVS Young Carers Service.

A dedicated space at PKAVS Carers Centre has been created specifically for young carers to enjoy. This will be a safe space for them to come and relax, meet friends, or catch up with their support worker. This room will be named the Barbara Vaughan Young Carers Den. This will be a lasting testimony to the fantastic support Barbara gave to young carers living in Perth & Kinross.
