Who is a Young Adult Carer?
A Young Adult Carer is someone aged 18-25 who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, friend and/or neighbour. The people they care for may be affected by disability, physical or mental ill-health, frailty or substance misuse. A carer does not need to be living with the person they care for. Anybody can become a carer at any time in their life and sometimes for more than one person at a time.
Responsibilities may include:
- Doing the cooking, cleaning, shopping etc
- Personal care (helping to get dressed and washed)
- Managing finances
- Picking up prescriptions, helping with medication
- Emotional support
- Looking after other family member such as younger siblings
